Even when Mary attempts to assert her own autonomy, and perhaps correct \this imbalance, by engaging in a sexual relationship with another man, she is nowhere close to achieving the level of freedom and autonomy represented by James and his motorcycle. While James and Mary seem to be otherwise of roughly equal age and social status, their relationship is a fundamentally unequal one because it is predicated on such a socially conditioned gender imbalance. Instead, she must settle for what is available to her, in the form of middle-aged, romantically unappealing John. On the other hand, since freedom “isn’t the same for girls,” Mary has no such options. Its an irony of life saying: sometimes, good things happen in goodbyes. This will never make sense to me, but I will try to focus on how lucky I was to have had her at all. Children always say 'Its not fair' Thats exactly how I feel right now. Give the child a longer life by asking other to keep his memory alive. James is able to go off on adventures and be “free,” implying not only physical freedom but also the freedom for sexual promiscuity and autonomy. Ending a eulogy for a child can be the most heartbreaking words youll ever speak. This passage again illustrates the uneven playing field when it comes to sexual and romantic relationships between men and women. On the good side of life, for us to ever get to a new level, a new tomorrow, or the next step, something has to end. In scenario C, the narrator continues to discuss the reasons that Mary has settled for a sexual relationship with the older John when she really wishes she could be with James. That hope, that navet, that is our greatest strength as humans. Some chapters are little more than a few sentences in length, while others stretch. It stops too quick, or else it goes on too long. Life can be seen to suffer from a drastic lack of editing. But we force ourselves to believe it anyway. Obviously, where art has it over life is in the matter of editing. We know that, by their nature, 'ending' and 'happy' never make good roommates. Freedom isn’t the same for girls, so in the meantime Mary spends Thursday evenings with John. We all dream of stories with happy endings. When one door opens, another closes but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see. But James is often away on his motorcycle, being free.
